A scratched off poster at the Opera grounds, an e-mail address, an opportunity that arose for potential filmmakers at the end of 2009. From a large pool of submissions, the Egyptian Film Center selected five short film scenarios in January 2010 and offered the writers a scholarship to develop their skills. The Center gave each of the five film makers equipment, training and whatever support they needed to create their movies. The one condition was that they had to be the directors. For some it was a first, while others had had previous directing experiences; for everyone it was a great production opportunity. Once selected, the directors were given complete freedom with their films.
One year later, the Center reached out once again to those five directors, to offer support for new films, while at the same time opening the door for applications to select five new scholarship recipients. Unfortunately, the attempt was stalled because of the January 25th revolution, and has not been repeated since. The Egyptian Film Center continues to offer support for filmmakers, but on a smaller scale. The following videos are the product of the January 2010 scholarship.
