Life

You Cousin of an Orange, You Sweetness, You Tangerine

BY Abdel Hafiz Swilam

Life has become bitter;

It’s all “take!” or “give me that!”

Our health is going down the drain,

We’ve all gotten too fat,

Mama we keep telling ourselves caring killed the cat

If he weren’t Egyptian, he’d have died and thrown in the hat

Sickness, disease, and fever, just ask the thermostat,

Humiliation, suffering; with much more to come than that.

You cousin of an orange, you sweetness, you tangerine;

We had a revolution, and everything hidden is now seen.

You went to claim your due, and all they could say was, “What?”

And just to get your rights, you had to pay ‘em a tray of duck.

How many times did we try to talk

To El Presidente and his veep,

Who all they did was drive our economy off the cliff into the deep.

But as soon as he got sick,

He scampered for the hills with a leap.

But I’m sick too: what about me? Forced to live on the cheap.

“Tut, tut, my dear, from you, he said, I don’t want to hear a peep.”

And now he’s taken our money abroad, and absconded to some country deep.

You cousin of an orange, you sweetness, you tangerine;

We had a revolution, and everything hidden is now seen.

We said the army and the people are one hand,

And then we danced and cheered, like we were all a united band,

And the ship, with patriotic sails, was going to leave the land.

And then suddenly one day,

There were eighty-million yakking “This!”, yakking “That!”

All of a sudden our unity seemed like nothing but flat.

Meanwhile the bloody SCAF

Was assaulting the most honourable protesters with a laugh,

And over its face had hung a sheet,

So its condemned people it could cheat.

While foreign hands which had no love

Stood by and helped put on the heat.

But the truth crashed our jubilee

And it turns out we had said, “one hand” foolishly

You cousin of an orange, you sweetness, you tangerine;

We had a revolution, and everything hidden is now seen.
